A Saint Play: The Freak

Theoretical project for short play “The Freak” by Erik Ehn.

A little girl is born with wings, only to get them cut off by a Knight in her dream. The nightmare becomes real. Religion and myth intertwine in this sensitive play by Erik Ehn.

Using my own fragility and resilience from the life I’ve encountered growing up queer in ultra-conservative Singapore, I created characters that I felt compassion for. This play speaks to our abilities as human beings to know pain and remain magnanimous. How do we heal our deep hurts and still find joy?
